Haynes manual chapter 1, engine.

look under valve clearance adjustment, that is what is sometimes referred to as tappett adjustment.

it is the clearance between the rocker arm and the top of the valve. you will need feeeler guages a spanner (10mm) and a flat blade screwdriver

My tappets are just an incredibly tight bolt - it's an A/F size, rather than metric (can't remember size exactly). Also, imperial feeler gauges (thousandths of inch) are easier to use than metric - the numbers are easier to work out (but metric do work just as well, if that's all you've got).

In my Haynes book of lies (Ford Escort '75 to '80) it's on Chapter 1, Section 42, pages 51/ 52. Tells you which valves to have open when adjusting others - e.g. when valve 1 exhaust and valve 6 inlet are open, adjust 3 inlet and 8 exhaust clearances, and so on.

It's dead easy once you've done it once - just take your time, recheck when you've finished, and don't forget to do it when the engine's cold.

Rocker cover off and tools at the ready.

Feeler gauge, 7/16" ring spanner and a flat screwdriver isn't it? I used to put mine in neutral and take the plugs out so it would turn over easily with the crank pulley nut. Looking from the front, when 1 and 6 are open adjust 8 and 3, when 4 and 2 are open adjust 5 and 7, when 8 and 3 are open adjust 1 and 6 and when 5 and 7 are open adjust 4 and 2. Standard cam and settings for 1300 are 0.20-0.25mm inlet 0.46-0.50mm exhaust. GT cam is 0.28-0.33mm inlet, 0.53-0.58mm. These are cold settings. Slacken the locknut off and turn the screw on the pushrod end till the feeler gauge is just nipped and will slide back and forward with just a bit of resistance. Get a new rocker gasket or you'll have oil down the engine. If you look the valve numbers all add up to 9 when you are adjusting them.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

With the Fraud engine you don't even need a screwdriver (they are a friction nut) - just remember it fires 1243 & when the rockers are rocking on 1 adjust 4 etc

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

Should the valve clearances be done when the engine is stone cold or slightly warm?

What ever is specified

Most important thing is don't make them too tight as it will badly affect the running particularly at slow speeds.
Make them a little too wide and you just get extra noise.

One more bit of advice, check that the faces of the rocker arms aren't pitted from hitting the top of the valve stem.
You will need to unbolt the rocker assembly to visually check them.
If they are pitted, get them re-ground/replaced, otherwise your feeler gauge will give you a false measurement.
